Sydney Loyola’s journey is one of self-discovery and transformation. A first-generation Filipino immigrant, her childhood in the island province of Palawan shaped her deep connection to nature, which continues to inspire her work as a choreographer. Sydney’s life took a pivotal turn when she transitioned from male to female, a process captured in a documentary that highlights her personal journey, migration to the U.S., and the challenges she faced.

In a portrait of Sydney, she is depicted in the sea, symbolizing her connection to Palawan. Wearing traditional tribal attire, she stands unveiled, representing her focus on the present. Two veiled women beside her symbolize the past and the future. Surrounding her are floating geometric shapes that represent the emotions and experiences she carries, with light shining from them to signify the positivity she has maintained, even after the loss of her mother.

The portrait also highlights Sydney’s role as a choreographer, showing her controlling the sea and sky, reflecting how she choreographs both her art and her life. Sydney’s hope for the future is that embracing one’s true identity will no longer require courage, and people can live authentically without fear.
